Isolation And Partial Characterization of Dominant Cyanobacteria From North East Region of India

North-East region of India is one among the biodiversity hot spot in the world. More than 700 cyanobacterial isolates have been encountered from all over NE region of India covering almost all possible habitats during 2004 to June, 2010 and are maintained as an unialgal in the Fresh water cyanobacterial Repository of IBSD, Imphal, Manipur (National facility created by DBT, Govt. of India in 2009, Ref No.: BT/PR/11323/ PBD/ 26/ 171/ 2008 dated 31st March, 2009). Out of these cultures, twelve (12) dominating cyanobacterial strains were selected on the basis of their high compositions of phycobiliproteins and studied their morphological and biochemical characterization thoroughly. These strains belong to five genera namely Phormidium (02), Plectonema (01), Nostoc (06), Anabaena (02) and Westiellopsis (01)..
