Reshu Chaudhary, R S  Sengar and Sanjiv Kumar

Sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) is the most valuable commercial crop of India. It is excessively used in sugar industry and distillery nesides earning foreign exchange. The contemporary sugar industry plays significant roles in relation to food, energy and economic security. Present investigation deals with the effect of light intensity on leaf sheath explants and shoot regeneration of sugarcane varieties CoS 98259 and CoS 767. Maximum shoot regeneration and number of shoots per culture has been recorded in 16 hr photoperiod of 4000 lux light intensity at the room temperature of 25±2°C in both varieties of sugarcane.
