Intestinal Diseases

Intestinal diseases refers to the infectious, autoimmune or physiological states affecting the small and large intestine. Diseases of intestines generally cause vomiting, constipation and altered stool such as blood in stool.

Disease affecting Small Intestine includes Enteritis due to inflammation and Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease. Chronic diseases due to malabsorption causes Autoimmune Coeliac Disease, Carcinoid Syndrome, Infective Tropical Spruce and Congenital Short Bowel Disease. These diseases show symptoms such as malnutrition, weight loss and fatigue.

Disease affecting Large Intestine may affect it in whole or in part. This includes Appendicitis caused by inflammation of appendix, Colitis which is due to inflammation of large intestine, Colon Polyps and Colorectal Cancer. Generally inflammation of large intestine is due to Clostridium difficile.Functional Colonic Diseases refers to the idiopathic disorders which includes Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction. These diseases may cause constipation, abdominal pain or a fever.
