Morphological and Cellular Changes Occurring in Anemia Associated with Chronic Renal Failure in Dogs

The study was carried out in 43 dogs suffering from anemia associated with chronic renal failure to evaluate the incidence, type, severity and hematological changes of anemia and 12 apparently healthy dogs. The dogs exhibiting clinical manifestation of pale mucous membranes, anorexia, lethargy, chronic weight loss, polyuria and polydipsia were examined clinically and subjected to complete analysis. Non regenerative anemia was seen in 28 (65.12%) dogs and regenerative anemia was seen in 15 (34.88%) dogs. Majority of the dogs showed normocytic normochromic anemia as the major cellular changes, however, few dogs also showed microcytic and hypochromic changes along with anisocytosis and poikilocytosis. There were no strength of regeneration noticed in all 43 cases with reticulocytes <1 per cent with most of the cases falling under the category of moderate to severe anemia.
